For decades the 80-plus acre tract of land between the train tracks and Hopkins Avenue bustled with activity. As many as 10,000 workers for A. O. Smith from 1910 to 1997- and, from 1997 until 2006, Tower Automotive - worked there in dozens of buildings. Those buildings are almost completely gone. But we took a look into two that remain.

From the view I usually have of them, the four remaining Agricultural College buildings designed by Alexander Eschweiler and erected in 1911-12, are a mystery. They're perched above Swan Boulevard in a position that suggests respect. But they're also obscured from the road because they're peeking out from trees and overgrown tangles of weeds, lurking like escaped prisoners hiding from their fate.

We've climbed wooden ladders up into dark spaces to reach the top of the St. Josaphat dome, walked countless spiral staircase to get to the peak of the City Hall tower, we've explored boiler rooms in old schools and in a few days you'll read about a visit to the Eschweiler buildings on the County Grounds. By now I've seen Milwaukee from the top of the Allen-Bradley clocktower, the 41st floor of the U.S. Bank Building, the lantern atop the dome at St. Josaphat Basilica and even from a twin-engine plane I piloted over Downtown. I've even viewed City Hall tower from the roof of The Pabst Theater. But I've got to say, it's much more exhilarating to look down on Milwaukee from atop Henry Koch's most famous hometown creation.
